Open Bottom Style
The following is from the Orea official website:
"Many years ago we cut these giant holes into the bottom of some V3 brewers to see how they performed. The results were intriguing and we've always wanted to release something like this one day.
The wide open base has ridges to hold the filter in place, allowing the paper filter to bend in the middle, creating a more center-pour flow. Early testing has shown that center-pour recipes work very well with this brewer.
We developed this open bottom design because we believed it offered something different from our traditional approach.
I hope you all love it too!"
Delicate Finish
This open-bottom brewer is made from the same high-purity porcelain as the Sensu Cup. It is made by a small, family-run craft porcelain factory in Taiwan that specializes in traditionally producing delicate porcelain tea utensils. It's so delicate that you can see through the brewer when it's held in direct sunlight.
This is also proof of the high quality and purity of the ingredients and the high temperature at which they were fired.
Expanding the ways to brew coffee
Porcelain (and ceramic) brewers are naturally designed to absorb heat quickly, lowering the temperature of the coffee when it first starts to brew.
This brewer does not dissipate this heat as quickly (compared to glass, etc.) and is better insulated to maintain temperature during the latter stages of brewing.
This gives the resulting coffee a more balanced, rounded mouthfeel and a unique, delicious sweetness.
If a glass brewer of the same shape is very bright and juicy, a porcelain brewer tends to be very balanced and sweet.
Temperature stability of porcelain
Most ceramic drippers use too much material, which ends up sucking heat away from the coffee.
According to the manufacturer, this dripper uses 5 times more material than the ceramic V60, 4.5 times more material than the ceramic Kalita Wave, and significantly less material than any other ceramic/porcelain brewer on the market.
By simply reducing the mass of material, we mitigate the potential impact of the materials used, increase temperature stability, and reduce energy loss at critical stages during extraction (i.e. the early stages).
This design results in less energy loss in the first two pours and a more stable temperature profile in the latter stages of extraction.
Clear acrylic base
It comes with a clear acrylic base that allows you to place the dripper stably on top of your cup or server. This base does not snap into place (like the V3 brewer), but rather the dripper sits on top of the base, and the two parts are separate.
The main reason for splitting them into two materials is to reduce the mass of the dripper, which reduces the heat it takes from the coffee, and also because the handle and base are said to be the two most likely to break (by far) on most ceramic drippers, Orea chose this construction to avoid those two.
A dripper used by professionals around the world
Sherry, the 2022 World Brewers Champion, also used the Orea Brewer at the world championships. (This is a Trogamid dripper.)
Staff Comments
"They're just so cute. The subtleties of the dripper are important, but ceramics have a charm that makes you fall in love with them as you use them. In fact, when I started making coffee, a senior colleague gave me a ceramic dripper, and I still use it today.
The open bottom, a feature of this brewer, allows for a clean and consistent drop, making it easy to express sweetness. Personally, I think this is a masterpiece that has made the Orea series the best.
