Boost your extraction
Booster is a tool that adjusts and strengthens the flavor and concentration during extraction by changing the flow rate.
By placing it between the paper filter and the dripper, it dramatically increases the number of contact points of the paper filter directly below the coffee bed.
This allows for varying flow rates and extractions that are less prone to channeling.
As a result, you can extract coffee without bitterness or dryness even when making a large amount of coffee, and by simply adding a booster under the paper, you can make various changes such as grinding finer, making it sweeter, or bringing out more body, without changing the brewing equipment you use!
The Booster was tested over a year with Matt Winton (2021 World Brewers Cup Champion) to optimize hole size, diameter and material to ensure the most consistent flow possible.
Matt Winton's comment:
"When I first started using flat-bottom coffee drippers, I had heard of other people using fine grinds to achieve high extraction, but for me it always ended up being too bitter, so I didn't really see the benefit.
After asking around, I was directed to a blog post written by Jonathon Gagne that suggested placing a mesh screen under the paper filter of a Fellow Stag Brewer. I gave this a try and was amazed at how well it worked!
After experimenting with different mesh diameters and hole sizes, we realized that the appeal of this technology is not in moving the paper away from the dripper, but in increasing the number of contact points between the paper and the mesh, thereby improving the flow.
Working with a Shivalist, we found the perfect mesh size that dramatically improved flow and eliminated clogging when brewing rich light roast coffee! Now I can use other people's recipes and get a consistent, fast flow without the bitterness that I had before. No clogging!
I currently use this mesh in all my flatbed brewers including Olea, Stag, Kalita and April.
This allows for a completely free flow and consistent results without clogging. Works great with many different paper filters including Kalita, Sybarist FAST, Sybarist B3, APRIL, etc. In all cases it has helped improve the brewer.
The B3 Hybrid + 22mm disc combo also produced a richer, sweeter, and clearer flavor that was consistent from hot to cold coffee. I wish I had this setup during competitions to further enhance my brews on stage.
Even if you brew your coffee using a really slow drip method with no bypass, you can still increase the flow rate and ultimately it won't taste bitter, it's just more efficient and less prone to clogging and uneven brewing!"

Kigu team verification
The Kigu team also tested the Booster 45mm size with each of the April, Orea, and Kalita drippers. We realized that the taste definitely changes when using the same dripper.
The key points are as follows.
- Increased body and sweetness
- Increased sourness and juiciness
- Less likely to cause clogging
- Easier to achieve a consistent flavor
- You can create different flavors using the same recipe
- The flow rate (time it takes for the coffee to drip) does not change much.
Tips on how to use it
The key is to press the paper filter into the Booster until it sticks to the surface and rinse it. This product promotes water flow by contact between the paper filter and the metal surface, so if it is not firmly attached, it will not function properly.
Also, since the coffee is often extracted quite strongly, you can make more delicious coffee by adjusting the grind size, etc.
How to use
- Before first use, wash gently with soap and water.
- Place the booster in the dripper so that it is parallel to the ground. (For the 22mm size, place the protruding part facing down.)
- Place the paper filter in the dripper. Make sure that the bottom of the paper filter is firmly attached to the Booster.
- Rinse the paper filter so that the bottom of the filter is in contact with the Booster.
- Add the coffee grounds as you normally would and start brewing.
Variations
- 45mm: Can be used with most flat-bottom drippers (cannot be used with trapezoid or cone-bottom drippers)
- 22mm: Only available when using the B3 Hybrid with the cone dripper.
