The static electricity reduction function will work for about 60 grinds when using light or medium roast coffee. If you grind more than that, we recommend cleaning as described below.

Please note that if you grind dark roasted, oily coffee beans frequently, you will need to clean your Opus more frequently to prevent clogging and to keep the static reduction function working normally.

<Cleaning Method>

First, remove the catch cup and use a brush you have (such as a clean makeup brush, clean paintbrush, or other soft cleaning brush) to brush the inside of the outlet (where the grounds come out). This will clean the chute and allow the static reduction function to work properly.

Note: Static electricity may be more likely to occur depending on the season.

If you notice that your Opus is not producing as much ground coffee as it did the first time you used it (or that the outlet is clogged with grounds), don't worry. To use the grinder's anti-static function at its best,Regular cleaningis required.

<Cleaning Method>
Coffee outlet:

First, remove the catch cup and use a brush you have (such as a clean makeup brush, clean paintbrush, or other soft cleaning brush) to brush the inside of the outlet (where the coffee grounds come out). This will clean the chute and allow the static electricity reduction function to work properly. (The static electricity reduction part is located near the outlet.)

blade:

Remove the hopper at the top, hold the wire attached to the outer blade mold, turn it, and remove the outer blade. Brush the removed outer blade and the fixed inner blade with a brush you have (a clean makeup brush, a clean paint brush, or another soft cleaning brush, etc.).

Body and cup:

Wipe with a non-abrasive damp cloth, or dry if wet. (None of the parts can be used in a dishwasher or dryer.)

Note: How often you clean the chute and anti-static pins depends on a number of factors, including the roast level, processing method, variety, and altitude of the coffee beans you use. For example, naturally processed and darkly roasted coffees tend to produce more fines when ground and may therefore require more frequent cleaning.

The Opus has two grind size adjustment rings, an outer ring and an inner ring, which you use to set the optimal grind size.

Outer Ring

The outer ring is located on the top outside of the Opus. This ring allows you to adjust the grind size between numbers 1 to 11, where 1 is the finest setting and 11 is the coarsest. There are 4 steps of adjustment between each number, for a total of 41 steps.

Inner Ring

The inner ring can be accessed by removing the hopper.

The inner ring allows you to:

Fine-tuning the grind with the after-ring

Adjusting the inner ring by one step will shift the outer ring by 2/3 (.667) of one step. Because the outer ring is measured in .25 increments, the inner ring allows you to adjust the spacing in 1/6 measurements.

If you want to be a true Opus master: 1 step on the outer ring equates to 50 microns of blade height movement. The inner ring divides this adjustment into 3, giving you 16.7 microns of blade height adjustment.

Extending Opus' grind range

Adjusting the inner ring all the way to one end allows the outer ring to reach "0" (one setting finer than 1) and "12" (one setting coarser than 11), because the inner ring has a maximum of six steps, which equates to four steps on the outer ring.
Calibrating Opus

After extended use, your coffee grind may become coarse. To combat this, you can adjust the inner ring to a finer setting. Blade wear is a natural occurrence that occurs with normal use.

Inner Ring Basic Usage

1. Make sure the hopper is empty.
2. Rotate the outer ring to align it with the "6" center position.
3. Twist the hopper clockwise to remove it from the grinder and lift it up, exposing the blue inner ring.
4. Using your thumb and index finger, apply even pressure to the two exposed tabs on the inner ring and press down until they bottom out.
5. While still holding it down, use your other hand to rotate the outer ring in any direction. This will change the position of the arrow on the inner ring (counterclockwise towards "-" for finer grain, and clockwise towards "+" for coarser grain).
6. Each step on the inner ring is equal to two-thirds of a step on the outer ring. There are a total of six steps on the inner ring, six in both the finer and coarser directions.
7. Once you have reached the desired setting, release the inner ring to ensure the parts are tightly mated together.
8. Finally, install the hopper. Make sure the hopper is securely attached and Opus will start. If Opus does not start, you will need to remove the hopper and realign it.

When you want to make it a little more detailed,

1. Adjust the outer ring slightly to the desired position.
2. In that state, remove the hopper, and while holding down the inner ring, turn the outer ring one step counterclockwise with your other hand. The arrow on the inner ring should now be pointing one step toward the "-" mark.
3. Release the inner ring and check that the parts are securely interlocked, then attach the hopper.
4. Turn the outer ring one step towards the finer side.

→Now, you can set it to a slightly more precise position than you originally had.

When you want to make it a little rougher,

1. Adjust the outer ring to the desired coarse setting.
2. In that state, remove the hopper, and while holding down the inner ring, turn the outer ring one step clockwise with your other hand. The arrow on the inner ring should now be moving one step toward the "+" sign.
3. Release the inner ring and check that the parts are securely interlocked, then attach the hopper.
4. Turn the outer ring one step coarser.

→Now, we are able to set it to a slightly coarser position than we had originally intended.
